
Wild Planet has its roots in a major West Coast
seafood company, Carvalho
Fisheries. Carvalho Fisheries principals, William Carvalho
and Bill McCarthy, have a combined 35 years of experience in the
seafood industry. They possess intimate knowledge of industry practices
and in 2003 chose to discontinue involvement in fisheries that either
employ harvest techniques that result in the wasteful discard of
usable species or contribute to marine habitat damage. Carvalho
Fisheries now only engages in the buying and selling of trap-caught
and line-caught products.
Our belief is that conservation of wild habitat and
harvest of wild seafood are both compatible and synergistic. (See
"A wild planet is a prosperous planet") We wanted to offer
a product line consisting only of the most eco-preferable, wild
seafood on the planet. We promote the enjoyment of wild seafood
only from fisheries that sustain the wild planet. Thus arose the
name Wild Planet. This brand identification will help consumers
choose sustainable seafood.
Our third founder Dave Weston, brings 30 years experience
with the FDA and the California Health Department. His background
adds expert insight into nutritional enhancement technologies and
food safety. His passion is to maximize the essential nutrition
found in raw, wild seafood using shelf-stable sterilization technologies.
Dave views wild seafood as not just food but also as a powerful
nutriceutical that can enhance wellness and the quality of life.
He is converting his career in food purity and safety enforcement
into a mission to "raise the bar" of food excellence from
within the industry for the good of all consumers.
Wild Planet is a product development and marketing
company. Our focus is on isolating exemplary "micro-fisheries";
employ the best technologies to produce the highest quality, most
nutritive, safe and delicious wild seafood.
Since we operate the production company (Carvalho
Fisheries) and the marketing company (Wild Planet), we directly
oversee all phases of this process. From the selection of the fish
to the processing methods, our eyes are upon the products. We are
uncompromising in maintaining consistency of quality and compliance
with our mission.
